Using a Funeral Home
Some folks prefer to enlist the services of a professional funeral director to take care of the body of their deceased loved one. And there are many reasons why this may be the preferred option. As such, each year we update a general price list from each of the local funeral establishments so that you can simply compare prices from the comfort of your home (see below). This can be particularly helpful in a time of need.
But please keep in mind : We are sharing with you our most valuable information. So please consider supporting our efforts to make dignified affordable funerals more available to consumers by joining our organization or making a tax-exempt donation.

BURIAL INFORMATION
The Funeral Consumers Alliance was originally established to help its members make arrangements for a simple, dignified funeral. But it is also important to plan for the cost of burial. There are a number of large cemeteries as well as many country churches locally that have non-denominational graveyards (see below). It would be well worth one’s while to visit several cemeteries in order to do some planning. When you visit the cemetery, check on the cost of their plots, whether vaults are required, whether they sell vaults, the cost of grave opening on a weekday and on a weekend and/or holiday. Cemeteries are not required to give you a GPL (General Price List); only funeral homes and crematories give GPLs, by law.
Some cemeteries allow participation by the family. You must ask if this is important to you.

PLAN ONE – MODEST CONVENTIONAL FUNERAL
This includes the normal services of a funeral director. The funeral director removes the body from the place of death. Embalming is performed, with the related necessary care. The least expensive casket is provided. The funeral home is used for simple viewing and the service. The funeral director secures the burial permit and death certificate, and publishes a newspaper notice. (Note: A formal obituatry could cost between $200-400 additional). Services include a committal service by the graveside. This plan does not include a burial vault or cemetery charges. If the family desires participation by clergy, it makes the arrangements. |
PLAN TWO – SIMPLE BURIAL WITHOUT EMBALMING
The funeral director removes the body from the place of death, transfers the body to a simple container and transports it to the cemetery without a procession. Embalming will be performed at extra cost if requested or if required by actual circumstances. The funeral director secures the burial permit and death certificate, and publishes a newspaper notice. (Note: A formal obituatry could cost between $200-400 additional).Services include a committal service at the graveside, if desired. This plan does not include a burial vault, cemetery charges, or formal or extensive use of the funeral home. If the family desires participation by clergy, it makes the arrangements. |
PLAN THREE – SIMPLE CREMATION WITHOUT EMBALMING
A licensed mortician arranges for removal of the body from the place of death, and its transfer in a simple cremation container to the crematory. Embalming will be performed at extra cost if requested or if required by actual circumstances. The mortician secures a cremation permit and death certificate, and publishes a newspaper notice. (Note: A formal obituatry could cost between $200-400 additional). The cremated remains are returned to the family in a simple container. This plan does not include formal or extensive use of the funeral home.
Note: The directors will provide additional original death certificates for a small fee. Photocopies are not legal. See the list of Organizations Normally Requiring a Legal Death Certificate. |
Vets get 20 free death certificates. Also a $100 wartime benefit from the county.
